Pyrography Art

What is Pyrography?

Pyrography, also known as pokerwork or wood burning, is the intricate art of embellishing wood or other materials with controlled burn marks, often created using a heated object like a poker. Its name, derived from the Greek "pyr" (fire) and "graphos" (writing), aptly translates to "writing with fire." This captivating art form can be practiced using modern pyrography tools, a heated metal implement, or even sunlight through a magnifying lens. Its roots trace back to the 17th century, reaching its pinnacle during the 19th century as "pokerwork." Today, pyrography remains a cherished folk art in numerous regions, including Europe and South America.
